about me

i started this blog when i was in search of other modern west coast home design in the the city of vancouver, canada and beyond. i hope to provide my insights into the interesting and creative homes designs being built around the city. i believe the local pacific northwest context is very important to these homes and in my study and blogging, i hope to inspire and encourage more homeowners to build west coast modern homes that truly relate to their surroundings.

i, david kominek, am an architectural technologist and have a design firm DRKdesign here in vancouver. the goal of DRKdesign is bring forth the modern west coast vernacular to the mainstream so that all can enjoy its true function and beauty.

  1. I just discovered your blog recently, and I love it! I dream of living in a home like the ones you showcase here. I hope you’ll keep your readers posted about upcoming modern home tours. I didn’t know they had them, but now I know, I’d love to join in!
Have you had an opportunity to cover 904 Chilliwack Street in New Westminster? I always admire that home when I drive by.
I’d love to see if there are any other great examples out here in the ‘burbs.

    • thanks for liking my blog. i am glad not to be alone in enjoying modern architecture in the lower mainland.
i will do my best to give enough head notice about any upcoming tours or talks in town about modern residential architecture.
the project on 904 chilliwack street in new westminster is by randy bens architect. take a look at his website here : http://www.rb-architect.com/chilliwack/
there are a few good things popping up here and there in the ‘burbs and i will be sure to add this one to my map as well.
      thanks for reading angie!

    • Hi Randy! What a treat to be able to express my admiration for your work to you directly. I plan to peruse all the projects tonight – and I will bookmark your site in case I ever win the lottery so you can come and make over my 1958 bungalow! I recently did drive by the York Street house, and it’s magnificent. I understand that it’s been featured in some magazines?

    • chan, thanks for this one. is it an eyesore? just kidding. Nice pastiche of neo-classical ‘gestures’. if you have not seen coast modern film, yet you will be pleasantly surprised to see this house in the film also portrayed as a disaster that came from the excess of the 1980’s and 90’s.

  2. Hi David,

I met you about 5 years ago when you did my drawings for my home at 826 west 17th. I came across your name as I was looking up the Modern Home Tour. I have been working as an abstract, mixed media artist for the last 4 years. I have 3 paintings in the Modern Tour today, at 9 west 22nd. If you peruse the house, you can see my work. I am also at the IDS West show again. Let me know if you’d like to work together in the future.

    Best,
    Christine

    • Christine,

Thank you for reaching out. I have seen some of your work on your website, and hope you are loving your house more and more, since the renovation. I have plans to visit IDSwest on friday and saturday so hopefully we can chat then. See you next week.
      David

  3. Looking for a Mid Century Modern home for a Hollywood film location in Vancouver / Fraser Valley area out to Chilliwack. Needs to be very remote and not in a neighborhood. Surrounded by trees. Any interested parties please call me 604-710-5801 Dave. Shooting starts July 28th for 20 days.

  4. Hi Dave,
just came across your blog and spent the morning enjoying the various posts.
    Great resource, thank you.

I know it’s a long shot, but if you (or any of your readers) hear about a good quality modern home threatened with demolition, please post about it or get in touch with me directly. My wife and I have a fairly accessible property on the Sunshine Coast and are exploring the possibility of moving an existing home to it.

  5. hi

i’m an architectural historian at the university of auckland and ex-prof ubc school architecture … i’m looking for information on [ what i was shown by a real estate agent in the 1980s ] a largely concrete block house designed by ron thom near the fire station in the british properties … i see the fire station there is on cross creek but street view doesn’t help due to the tree cover bordering the street

    thanks

  6. Great website! However, I was disappointed to see that your own work isn’t visually such a vast improvement from the very eyesores criticized.

  7. I moved to Vancouver 5 years ago and have a strong passion for mid-century modern design. You’ve shed light on some homes and architects that I never knew existed in Vancouver. Keep up the posts!

  8. There is another TBP designed house (John Wallace) on Stevens Dr. West Vancouver- at 138 Stevens a few doors from the Stegeman residence. Built in 1960 by Lauder brothers and landscaped by Robilliard.

  9. 904 Chilliwack Street, New Westminster is a 1950s house updated in the cubist style with an addition added 🙂 I like it, although I must say it stands out as the only modern/updated home on a street of very old homes.
